Want to bring back the fun of snail mail? These free printable notecards for kids are an easy way to get children excited about writing, coloring, and sending a real note in the mail!
These printable cards come with 12 different notecard designs that kids can color, paint, draw on, or decorate however they like. They are perfect for writing a thank-you note, sending a letter to a grandparent, checking in on a friend, or simply letting someone know you’re thinking about them.
There is something extra special about getting a handwritten note in the mailbox—and these DIY notecards make it easy for kids to create their own!
Since they are blank- you can use these to craft so many things! Here is a list of what we have used these printables for:
What You Need
You only need a few basic supplies to make these homemade notecards:
- Free printable notecard designs (below)
- Printer
- White cardstock
- Scissors or a paper trimmer
- Crayons, colored pencils, markers, or paint
- Envelope
- Stamp
Cardstock is my favorite choice because it makes the finished cards feel more like a traditional notecard, but regular printer paper works too.
How to Make the Printable Notecards
Printing them out
Start by downloading the free printable notecard designs and printing them at home.
There are six printable pages with 12 different notecard designs, so you can choose the design that works best for the occasion.

IF YOU DON’T HAVE A PRINTER: You can also upload the files to staples or office max and have them print them! Sometimes the local library has a printer for public use!
Cutting out the notecard printables:
Once your pages are printed, cut the notecards apart.
A paper trimmer makes this super quick and gives you nice, straight edges. Of course, scissors work just as well if that’s what you have available.
You simply need to cut down the middle between the cards.
Fold the Notecard
Fold each piece of paper in half with the design on the outside.
Now you have a little blank notecard ready to decorate!
The inside is intentionally left blank so kids have plenty of room to write their own message.
4. Decorate the Notecards
This is the fun part!
Kids can decorate their cards however they want. They can keep it simple with crayons or markers or experiment with different art techniques.
Try:
- Crayons
- Colored pencils
- Markers
- Watercolor paint
- Finger painting
- Stickers
- Doodles
- Stamps
- Collage materials
- bleeding tissue paper.
You don’t have to make the cards perfect. In fact, the handmade look is part of what makes them so special!
Try Watercolor Painting
One of our favorite ways to decorate these cards was with a simple watercolor technique.
The designs make great outlines for kids to paint over, and the finished cards turn out so cute!
If your kids enjoy painting, this would be a fun watercolor activity for kids that results in something they can actually use and share.

A Fun Way to Teach Kids About Snail Mail
Making these printable notecards is more than just a kids’ craft. It is also a great opportunity to teach children how to send a letter.
Show them how to:
- Write a message.
- Fold the card and put it into an envelope.
- Write the recipient’s address.
- Add their return address.
- Put a stamp on the envelope.
- Place it in the mailbox.
Kids can learn so much from the process—and then they get the excitement of waiting for a response!
