Melted Crayon Art

Kids will adore this melted crayon art! Watching it slide across the paper to create amazing pictures will be a crowd-pleaser for sure! 

 

I am going to start with a disclaimer. You are using a heat source to melt crayons. It is hot. Please use extra caution when attempting this melted crayon art. Protect your little ones with extra oven mitts if needed. Use common sense! If they are too little, just pin it for a future use!

 

If you kiddos are old enough and able to understand that the griddle is hot, they will LOVE this activity! I even got my son hooked and he never wants to participate in our craft camp activity! 

 

Here is what you need to create melted crayon art

• an electric griddle
• crayon
• tin foil
• cardstock
• oven mitt

 

How to set up the Art Station

Cover the griddle with tin foil. The crayons are waxy and will soak through the card stock a little bit. This is to project your griddle so your pancakes don’t taste like crayons!

We just used basic cardstock. You could print out some printables (I have some here and here) and color them in. Or just rip out a page in a coloring book! You will probably need to peel some of the crayon paper off as well as it melts! You can do that beforehand if you know what colors you want to use!

We heated the griddle to 200-250. It gets warm. We laid out some oven mitts around where we were coloring to prevent our arms from getting burned. I would recommend wearing long sleeves and maybe even thin gloves if the kids are small.

Sometimes the paper moves. You could grab a rock from outside to put on the corner to hold it in place!

 

How to melt the Crayons

Place the cardstock on when you are ready to color and then just watch the crayons glide across! It’s so much fun! They remind me of using oil pastel in my high school art class. You can mix colors pretty good with to and it creates a neat effect!

I promise you, if you try this, you will have a hard time going back to plain crayons!
