Supplies needed to make yarn art
- Something sticky
- transfer tape
- clear packing tape
- Clear conTac adhesive liner
- Yarn
- cardstock Paper (colorful or plain) or cardboard box
- scissors

I listed all the different sticky materials I tried out. The packing tape was the most time consuming. I think the dollar store contact paper was the easiest and the most bang for your buck.
How to create art pictures out of yarn!
Art Prep
This project does require a little prep beforehand.
Step 1: I cut out some frame shapes out of cardstock or cardboard. I did oval, scalloped, square and rectangle but you can do whatever you want. You just need to be able to cut out the middle section.

Step 2: Peel off the back from your sticky material if you are using transfer tape or adhesive liner and lay it down with the sticky side up.

If you are using packing tape, lay it over each other to create a sheet.

Step 3: Place your frame right side up on your sticky material. Press around the cardstock to make sure it’s nice and stuck. The sheet of contact paper is pretty large so I could add 4 frames in a square of it at one time.

Step 4: Trim around the frame cutting off any excess material of the adhesive liner.

Step 5: Grab your yarn and snip off pieces of yarn. You want all lengths and colors to let your kids create whatever they want..
Now you are ready to start the creation process.
Yarn art
Taking whatever color of yarn you want, lay it on the sticky part of your picture. It holds onto the yarn as you wind it around to create images! I would just press the yarn as I go to ensure a good adhesion.

You will need to keep some scissors close to snip off any yarn pieces as you create your pictures!

Since the contact paper is clear, you can place a picture underneath to trace over with yarn!

alternative #1 for yarn art :
I did see a video where they took a pen apart and ran the yarn through the pen tubing. (I used a pental RSVP Pen)

Then they drew on the sticky part like you are drawing with a pen.

This did not work for me without some hiccups. You have to keep a piece of yarn flowing without getting tangled so it could easily flow through the pen. and it didn’t really stick that well. I found it much easier to just apply it with my fingers! But experiment and try it out and see what one is more fun to do!

Finishing the yarn art
Once you are done, you can place a piece of transfer tape over your picture to seal all the yarn in and trim off the excess. This part is optional of course!

Now you are left with some darling works of art that your kids will be proud to display!

Since the adhesive is see-through, you can hang them in windows as sun catchers!

Alternative #2 for yarn art:
If your kids are little older you could try this with glue. Either white glue or hot glue work, but you sketch out a picture and add some glue and then pieces of yarn. Work in small batches so the glue doesn’t dry.

Check out this cute flower picture! It’s all yarn!
