Transform your windows into masterpieces! Window painting will become so addicting! Stained glass, sweet messages to your neighbors, this DIY is so easy!
Seriously! Using the paint you already have, you can create the coolest window designs. It’s technically a kid’s craft but adults love it just as much as kids! Paint those windows up1
Supplies you need to do a Window Painting
- acrylic paint (people have said tempera paint works too)
- dish soap
- paintbrush
- painters tape (optional if you want to make a fun graphic image
The trick is to add a little dish soap to your acrylic paint. It makes it easier to remove when it’s time to take it down! Just stir it into the paint. I’m using DecoArt’s new colors for 2020! They are all so gorgeous and fits my color scheme for my blog so well!
Whatever you are painting first will be what is seen from the outside. I painted black for it to pop- and then I didn’t even have to be very careful as I painted because the black acted like a coloring page. (My friend Tanya and Travis decorated their window and he used an expo marker to sketch out his design before he painted!)
Wait until the black to dry and then add in all the other colors!
This doesn’t really do well with a second coat (it almost peels up the previous paint) So make sure you get it all coloring the first time. I always tried to keep the paint brush going in one direction for each spot to make it look nice. At this point, you kind of think, “Well, it doesn’t look that great.” But go outside and see your design from the street!
It looks so stinking cool! I can’t wait to paint up all my windows! It doesn’t block all the light coming into the house either!
I did want to show you the flower one I painted on my craft room window. It’s cool…but without the black outline, it’s pretty hard to see from the street!
How to clean up the window painting
I know this will be your next question: How well does it come off? I just sprayed it with windex and wiped. For a full window covering you will probably need lots of paper towels- the paper towels get covered with paint pretty quick. But it does come off! For really think parts you can get a little spatula or razor blade and take it off that way (or just scratch it with your nail!) But it DOES COME OFF!
People have mentioned that they did this with tempera paint but I personally haven’t tried it!

I actually tried painting windows with tempera. I do not recommend. If there is a lot of moisture (heavy steam or rain) tempera will run. Even a heavy mixture from powder. Acrylic stays until you take it off. Not to mention the beautiful stained glass effect.
