How to make a Paper Plate flower
There are two different ways to do these paper plate flowers. For little kids, I would just hand them the paper plates and let them paint first. For older kids, I would have them cut out the flower shapes first and then paint! Either way works! But I’m going to walk you through the older kids version.
Step 1: Cut out.
There is no pattern to follow for these flowers. You just want to scallop the edges of the plate. Each flower is 4-6 layers of plates and you want to gradually cut off more and more of each flower making them smaller and smaller.

Here is a visual of what our layers look like. You could do wider petals, or longer petals (like a daisy or sunflower.)

You could have each kid paint a plate and make a “family flower”.
Step 2: Paint
Time to paint the plates! If the plates are precut, you can make the edge of the petals a bit darker and work your way in with lighter paint. You also don’t need to paint the insides of some of the flowers since other paper plates will go on top of them!

We like to use watercolors, but you can use any craft paint you have on hand! You can see we also splatter these!
FUN ALTERNATIVE: Mix a little paint and water in a squirt bottle and have kids spray the plates to get the painted look!
Here is the smaller kid version- Painted the plates first and then cut out (so swap step 1 and step 2!)

Fun Adaptation: Try these with coffee filters for a different look

Step 3: Curl edges
To add a little more dimension, I take the end of my paintbrush and curl the edges of the petals so they have a little more shape! This is optional of course!

Step 4: Assemble
Once the paint is dry, it’s time to assemble our paper plate flowers!
You can glue these layers together just going from big to small. You can also add a sticky foam spacer in between each layer to give it more depth!

These would be a perfect party decor but we added some magnets on the back to jazz up our refrigerator.
