Christmas time is about to get better with this fun playdough craft idea for kids that includes The Best homemade Playdoh recipe!

We had so much fun playing with our Halloween playdoh recently–that I thought we should reinvent it for Christmas! Playdoh 2.0  It’s so perfect for classroom parties or just to keep the little ones busy and when I say little, i don’t really mean little because my 13-year-old played with it for 2 hours this afternoon!)
And this recipe is is just the most soft doh ever!
Supplies to make The Best Homemade Playdoh recipe:
- 1 cup water
- 1 TBS vegetable oil
- Food coloring
- 1 cup flour
- 2 tbs salt
- 1 tsp Alum
- essential oils

You probably already have these ingredients on hand except maybe the ALUM. I found this at Walmart in the spice aisle!
I ran out of Alum and made a batch without it and the next day it was so sticky and we couldn’t even get it out of the package–so don’t skip out on it!
The Best Homemade Playdoh recipe:
Step 1:
Add water and oil to the saucepan.
Bring to a boil.

Step 2:
Take off the burner. If you are adding in food coloring and oils to make it smell good you put them first. Then add in flour, salt, and alum.
If you don’t add any food coloring, it will stay the color of the flour!

Step 3:
Start stirring. It will start to look like mashed potato consistency. Once it sticks together, you need to pick it up and start kneading it, BUT it’s HOT! So put on some gloves or wait until it’s cool enough to handle!

There might be a few white flour clumps in the dough. The more you play with it, the smoother the playdough gets!

How to store your playdoh
You will want to store it in an airtight container! (I use an old sour cream container!) You can also place it in a resealable plastic bag at room temperature, ensuring it’s completely cool before storing to prevent mold growth. You can also keep it in the fridge for a longer shelf life
How long does it keep? I’m not entirely sure! We have kept it for about a month but I’m not sure how much longer it could past that!
Ho Ho Playdoh

I like to gather up some fun arts and crafts supplies to inspire creativity (and most can be found at the dollar store!)
Fun things to play in the dough with
- Pipe cleaners
- googly eyes
- buttons
- stars
- bells
- snowflakes
- beads
- faux candy canesÂ
My 8 year old came up with this cute creation! Isn’t it so fun! The Christmas tree is actually from a cookie cutter!

If your kids are little, they might just enjoy just pressing some fun shaped items into the dough! Like making cookies!

You can also use this amazing dough with my playdoh sheets! I have some for each season!

I whipped up some playdoh and a gingerbread house and had the kids decorate it with the doh and supplies! It was so fun!

Playdoh Game
I created some Play-doh Prompts. You can print them out and the kids can use the visual prompts to get the creative juices flowing! Â
OR you can turn it into a game! Have them draw a card and sculpt the prompt while others guess what it is!

If you are looking for a great printer to use – I love my HP! I wrote up a whole post why The reasons I love the printer. This post also shows how you can make sure you are getting the best prints by adjusting your settings!
IF YOU DON’T HAVE A PRINTER: You can also upload the files to staples or office max and have them print them! Sometimes the local library has a printer for public use!
