How to make DIY gingerbread house
Step 1: Print out pattern
I created a 3-D gingerbread house pattern to make sure the house pieces all match up!
Click on the link below and the printables will automatically open in a new window.
GET THE GINGERBREAD HOUSE PATTERN HERE!
If you are looking for a great printer to use – I love my HP! I wrote up a whole post why The reasons I love the printer. This post also shows how you can make sure you are getting the best prints by adjusting your settings!
IF YOU DON’T HAVE A PRINTER: You can also upload the files to staples or office max and have them print them! Sometimes the local library has a printer for public use!
Once it’s printed, cut out each piece.
Step 2: Trace
Pick sections of cardboard that have the least amount of blemishes.
Trace around the pattern pieces with a pencil or pen.

Step 3: Cut out gingerbread house shapes
Once it’s all traced out, cut the shapes out. You need two of each piece of the pattern that instructs to cut 2. You should end up with two of each size except the chimney has 4 pieces. There is no bottom to this house!

Step 3: Add windows and a door
Take your utility knife to cut out windows and a door. This step is optional but adds a little more fun to the end result.
I didn’t add any windows to the pattern so you can just figure out where you want them.
Step 4: Assemble the gingerbread house.
For this step I used WHITE hot glue sticks. You load them into your hot glue like regular glue sticks and can just add in clear when you are done. They do not harm your glue gun at all. It’s totally optional- I just had some leftover from THIS gingerbread garland project!
If you are having kids help you, you might want to choose an alternative like regular elmers glue since the chance of having burned fingers will be increased!
I started by attaching the sides of the house all together.

Then, I added the roof.
The chimney is last. It is easier to assemble the chimney and then hot glue it into place.

If you used the hot glue gun- You will end with some “glue gun hairs”! Just zap them with a hair dryer on hot to melt them away!
Decorate the gingerbread houses
Once the house is all put together- This is where the real fun happens! Adding in all the little gingerbread house details! You can prep the houses to this step and have the kids take over with this part so they can each create their own houses.

I gathered up all sorts of fun supplies to decorate the house with
- pipe cleaners (red and white striped to look like Candy canes)
- buttons
- pony beads
- faux peppermints
- mini Christmas lights
- candy (found in the mini tree ornament section at hobby lobby, dollar tree, and walmart)
- jewels
- pom poms
- stickers
I laid these all out on a fun tray so they were easy to see what the options are and easy to grab!

Option 1: Play dough

This option is my favorite! Your kids could reuse these cardboard houses time and time again and have so much fun decorating them differently each time!

I couldn’t find any white Play-Doh in stock- so I ended up making a batch of super soft homemade dough! I just don’t add any food coloring to it to keep it white.

You can roll it out , create your shapes, and add them to your house. Press in your fake candy and buttons etc! The playdough really helps the candy stick!

Once you are done, remove your props, smoosh all the play dough back together, and store it in an airtight container to use again and again!

You can also use air dry clay and let dry if you want a make it a permanent gingerbread house

Option 2: Puff paint
The puffy paint is really fun and gives great dimension! It just like using icing! Use it decorate and then press in some of the fun items from above. If you go this route- your puff paint will dry and you will get to keep your gingerbread house forever!

You can see the puff paint in action on my gingerbread advent calendar.

This project would make the most fun craft night your friends.
