We made these a few years ago while we were camping! The kids walked around and found their perfect stick that they could turn into a wand! I bought brown air dry clay and the kids could just create the perfect wand! I’m going to show you a few different options- but just wanted to share that this would make a great camping craft for kids!
Supplies to make a wizard wand
- Sticks or pencil
- air dry clay (I used white or you can use brown if you don’t want to paint!)
- Paint
- hot glue gun (instead of air dry clay
I like the Crayola Model Magic. It’s very lightweight, easy to work with, and air dries! But you could use any kind of clay!

How to DIY a wizard wand
Option 1: Clay Wizard Wand
Start by taking a blob of clay and squishing it out flat. Wrap around the handle of one of your sticks. Then it’s just a matter of squishing and stretching to cover it and make the handle look like you want!

You can add more clay as needed. You can also pull off some clay if you have too much.

We also did this on pencils! I just made sure not to cover up the eraser so it could still be used.

Option 2: Hot glue wizard wands
These are for the older crowd since the hot glue is HOT. Add hot glue around the handle. The trick to get a nice smooth handle is to hot glue fast all the way around and then keep rotating the stick or pencil until the glue dries. If you don’t rotate, it will start dripping and if you lay it down, it will have a flat edge.

Paint your wand
If you went the white clay or the hot glue version, you will need to paint! We used a brown paint (light and dark) but you can use any color you want!

We went over the details with gold paint to make the wands look a little extra special! You can also add in some black to any crevices to make the detail pop! Here is the snake handle we made! This one is a favorite!

The pencil wands can still be used. I was mindful to keep the eraser free and I didn’t add any details anywhere near the tip so it can be sharpened!
