So i love using you guys as my own little decorators! I loved all the feedback i got on THIS post
And since i’m still like sitting in my undecorated corner sucking my thumb cause i just can’t make any decisions..
i thought i would turn it over to you!!!
here’s the bedroom….(from the mls listing…not my bed)
I forgot to get a before move in picture…
but imagine it like the picture above.
without a bed.
and the two canvases.
We stuck our kind sized bed in there….
and a bunch of random crap…
(a mod podge of past bedrooms..)
(i didn’t fancy it up cause you need a gross before picture to reallllly make your after picture even more awesome.
Now…as soon as we closed on this house (or maybe even when we left the house after our first walk through) I get on pinterest and totally start to decorate in my head…
and i was all…i’m going to do this beautiful neutral calming bedroom.
an oasis…
a peace filled slumber room
see…so pretty!!!!
and i found these fun pins…
and i was like…WHAM stenciled bedskirt and headboard!
and i happened to have the greatest company EVER EVER.
i puffy puffy puffy heart them!
after MUCH debating…literally 3 weeks worth
i chose number 3! (called hand forged)(but i would have taken them all!)
and i got to it!!!!
i simply bought a queen flat sheet for like $9 at walmart
i used my preexisting bed skirt and just cut off the skirt part and measured for the 3 sides
and cause i’m such a thrifty gal…i totally used that blue skirt that i cut off and made an ACTUAL skirt for my daughter…cause all the hems were finished!
then i stenciled away (just whatever paint you have…mixed with fabric medium to make it not “crusty”
for the headboard…i just cut a giant piece of cardboard (luckily my husband just bought this big shelf for the garage)
and i covered it with batting and then hot glued the finished stenciled fabric around the sides
and while i love it….
i hate it.
let me tell you my issues…(they are not with the stencil. i love it and in fact have already reused it in my laundry room)
a. i hate the neutral…
(ironic right)
i crave a pop of color and fun.
it seems so blah blah blah.
and b.
I didn’t want to make the headboard overlap the windows…but i think it looks to small for the bed.
so there it sits….
i’m the kind of person that can’t do anything until i have a clear vision.
i need to see the finished product in my head before i start anything.
cause i’ll repaint the side tables and then two months later i will find the exact accent pillow that i want and then i will realize that the side tables will need to be repainted another accent color.
I’ve been spending a lot of “planning” time on this room….
but i just can’t find which direction to go!!!
(this is where you enter your input)
I know i will eventually distress the side tables (probably a neutral) (or maybe a high gloss?)
and then repaint the cedar chest a totally pop of fun color
and i want a lamp
i gravitate towards mercury ones..
and there will be PLENTY of pillows in my future
late one night i tell my husband we are going to swap the bed to other wall…
so we did…
and i didn’t work. the door opened up and hit our side table..
and to make it so there is room to walk around the bed to get to the closet and bathroom it was off center with the vault.
and we moved it back immediately.
so this wall is the only option…
what do you think of the size of headboard…?
should i do something like this and go all the way up the wall?
do you think it’s going to be weird looking if the headboard extends past the windows?
do i put a funky colored headboard up there..or just save it for the pillows?
Or should i paint that in between space an accent color?
I did think about doing this with molding…
but i don’t know if it’s going to look even smaller next to the bed…
(and getting a smaller bed is out of the question. i like my mammoth bed)
and let’s talk curtains….
do i do one panel on each window?
two panels?
one big curtain rod like this picture???
do i put fun print ones? just a solid fun color? or go classic and throw up some white and leave the color to the pillows?
What about a rug?
busy? neutral?
all of these are from rugs usa…except the bottom right is from HERE
and what color should i add in..?
i don’t want red…
and my husband has vetoed pink (or anything that looks too girly)
here are some pictures i’ve pinned that i keep coming back too…
or we could go even lighter…seafoam…
or i could do a coral (on the orange end..not pink end)
i also totally love this one…
ahhhh! just putting this post together has caused me anxiety! HELP!

hmm, I was going to say try moving the bed to another wall, but sounds like that out – – – I like that whole-curtain-rod behind the bed thing – – and pops of color would be fun. Good luck!!

i love the coral and the darker seafoam ones best. i happen to love color but did our bedroom in all white and then used color on my bedspread. plus i have an old chair in there that gives a little color along with some pictures and accent pieces. my headboard is a piece of old wood that we cut off from a door that used to be part of our barn. i am like you and want a clear vision before i start…but i want it done now. they don’t always work well together:) if i were you i would repaint the walls in a lighter color and leave the color to the bedspread or the curtains. i love the idea of repainting your dresser and stuff but to a color close to the wall color so that they blend in. that way your bed and bedding will be the focal point and will make it seem more relaxing and comfy cozy:)

I have NO decorating ability AT ALL and have never once posted a comment, but I thought I’d give my two cents. I love the headboard, but a thought came to me while scrolling through your pictures. Could you make the headboard be as big as your bed, but then to make it so it doesn’t look like it’s overlapping the windows, do the entire wall with one big curtain rod and have the drapes on each side like the picture you showed up there? Then you can’t really tell where the windows start/stop. Does that make any sense? NO idea if it would look good or not, but that was my thought. I think you should keep the headboard the neutral that you have and then throw in either the seafoam or the coral with pillows or new bedding. That’s my two cents. But, this is coming from a total NON-DIY’er of ANYTHING other than scrapbooking and card making!

I like the example of the one big curtain rod, you could make your curtains with the same pop color of the pillows plus have a headboard that fits your bed….

Besides the bed, is new furniture an option? I think part of the problem is proportions. I would look for bedside tables that are wider so that there is a smaller gap between the wall, the bedside and the bed. Rooms seem to look more polished and finished when all the furniture just sort of fits it perfectly. Awkward spaces and gaps tend to bring out the mismatchedness. The chest at the foot of the bed would look better if it was the same width of the bed. If you can get one the same size, I’d be tempted to use that stencil on it to mirror the bed head (maybe in reversed colours? Aiming to make it look like the chest and the bed belong together). Maybe some sweet little lace cafe curtains?
One weird trick I use when I think about buying something new for a room is looking at the existing furniture and thinking what shape it reminds me of. Is it a circle, a square or a rectangle? Not just thinking about the larger shape but things like if it has rounded edges, the shape of any accents or draw pulls, what it’s legs look like. Squares and rectangle items can look good together but circles (especially rounded corner things) look bizarro in a room of sharp edges.

So…my first thought was move the bed, because those windows really limit you. Then you stole my thunder and I actually had to THINK again.
So, here’s my two cents: 1) Pop the entire wall with a great color – blues and grays can still be neutral! Love the teal wall in that last shot. 2) Go HUGE with the headboard. As in, frame out a headboard about 6-8 inches taller than the tops of the window, but still below the ceiling. Frame out the windows to match, making your entire wall into a massive, cohesive headboard. 3) Roman or bamboo shades – nix the drapes if you frame out the whole wall – too busy. 4) Paint & distress the nightstands to coordinate with, not matchy match, the new window casings/frames. That will neutralize the whole wall, while still managing to keep it a nice, balanced focal point. 5) Pop pop pop your textile accents. Oh, and do something crazy funky fun with the cedar chest.
First off though, I think you need to find ONE thing you absolutely love. It could be art, or a pillow, or a lampshade. Pretty much anything, as long as you big-puffy-heart-love it and want it in the room. Then, take all of your color cues from it. Coordinate and contrast – if you can carry it around in your purse, even better! I carry around a placemat that has all of the downstairs colors in the pattern. I love the pattern, so if something works with the placemat, I’ve got color and movement and pattern covered!

You’re off to a great start! I love the stenciled bed skirt! Definitely add color with rugs, curtains, pillows and even possibly painting the door to the bathroom with color. I’m leaning towards navy with coral. I really love that combo right now. Also, mixing patterns, maybe a stripe with your current pattern, will make it more “interesting.” And yes, I love the mercury glass lamps. As far as the head board, I would add color there too. I would make that as big as the bed. Maybe a piece of plywood, finished with moulding and painted coral behind your current one? OR, depending on how much work you wanted to put into it, you could do tall board and batten and forget the headboard. Good luck!

If you like the whole wall of curtains idea, put them along the whole wall behind the bed. Then you can make the headboard whatever size you want and it won’t look like it is over lapping the Windows. I do think the scale of the headboard is off. Maybe grab a big cardboard piece and just hold it up behind the bed to see what it looks like. Go taller and see if you like that…Go wider and see if it bugs you. I think it is too small right now and not enough presence in the room. If you want a pop, it could be fun to do with the headboard.

One long curtain rod along that wall. Stencil fabric with your awesome stencil (can I borrow it when you’re done) and hang them from the ceiling behind your bed like a fake head board and another panel on each side of each of the windows. That’s my thoughts on your headboard problem!

Just my two cents here. I think you have to overlap the windows to have a headboard in there, even as much as you don’t want to. In one of the inspiration photos, the headboard is overlapping the windows and fits the bed size and it looks great – I think you should widen the headboard. AND I love the one long curtain rod for both windows thing. Super cool. With some billowy curtains – but I’d probably do one panel on opposite sides of the bed and leave the middle curtain free. And for pops of color I could totally see you with coral and mint just added into the mix you have. Bam.

I love the stenciled pieces. I honestly hate the word “love” above the bed. Maybe its the font but I think it takes away from the calm oasis because the font is block lettering and to me that kinda screams kids room. Maybe if it were in a different font it would mesh better. Oooo!!! You could do a white vinyl on your silhouette!! (Please dont hate me! I literally love everything else)

I really like the picture with the wrought iron bed headboard. Because the wrought iron let’s light through, it doesn’t matter that it covers pat of the window. You can also keep the more neutral palette that you already have going and use pillows, flowers, and smaller rugs (even if they are on top of a large rug) to bring in more color. Once you paint your cedar chest, and the side tables everything will pop because of the contrast. And with the side tables – live with them for a bit before you “distress” them. You might like the clean look of fresh paint – your eye won’t have so much to look at. And change out the “LOVE” and find a painting or something else that can add to the color you want (a wreath? photos with great matting?)

I feel like I just read a post written by me. I have the exact same problems…with my entire house! I have a few great fun things I have either created or received to put on my walls. But they are all still sitting in a pile on my table, 7 canvas’& 4 wall hangings I have yet to frame. I just can’t make a final decision! I think of all this wonderful stuff I could do but then I won’t commit.
Maybe we have commitment issues?!?
I can’t wait to see what you come up with…and maybe one day I’ll have as many followers as you and can ask for advice from them! Right now its just me asking myself questions haha. But everyone has to start somewhere!
Good Luck!

Mint, or Seafoam seem the most relaxing to me. I’ve heard that oranges and corals cause fighting. So not a fan of those for a bedroom. But just my thoughts.

I think a headboard that goes up the wall would look great! And the long curtain rod! And the coral! And a mercury lamp! And a neutral, but plush, rug! Lots of fun, bright pillows! What am I missing?? Oh, yes…tons and tons of photos to show us the before, during, and after! We are just in a rental and I cannot wait to be able to plan and decorate some day!

WOW I’M SO EXITED FOR YOU!! I love decorating because it’s just so much fun(: I think that you should stick with the wall color that’s already there because it looks nice. Your main focus in the room is your bed, so what would really bring everything together (I think), is if you went crazy with the pillows and sheets. Orange, green, seafoam, textures, ANYTHING!!! Because your wall color is neutral, it’ll be really easy to play with the color scheme. Winter you could go for dark tones, summer could be light, that kind of thing. Also, you could always buy different colored curtains if there isn’t enough color for you?
Another thing is with the headboard, if you had curtains behind it, (just like the one in the picture with the long black rod) it wouldn’t matter if the headboard overlapped. It could actually create more of a nice cozy feeling to your room. Though I think that with the headboard you could make it taller too, that would look nice. Adding little ‘indents’ to the sides would make it gorgeous.
AND THEN YOUR DONE!! Such simple changes can really make a difference(: Hope you find this useful, can’t wait to see the result!!

My first thought, like everyone else, was to move the bed. Did you try it on the wall to the left on the picture? My initial thought was to put the bed there and then move your chest from the foot of the bed to between the windows. You could throw some pillows and a throw on it an create a little nook -like area. If that isn’t an option than I think the best thing to do would be to use curtains to bring the room together. What if you stenciled the same pattern on a few panels and hung them with a coordinating color to bring it up on the wall (like the headboard) I think it looks great though, so once you figure out the bed situation, you’ll be set!
