I love creating themed trees! It’s so fun to put together all my favorite quotes and movie moments on a Christmas tree! This is actually my 4th themed tree! Just click on the names below to see my other trees!
One of my favorite parts is creating an SVG cut files bundle with all the quotes so you can easily recreate the trees! And I literally could not stop making them for this tree! Harry Potter has SO MANY amazing quotes. Inspiring AND funny ones! And I bundled them all together and put them in my shop! You can use code LUMOS to get them 50% off!
Supplies to recreate the Harry Potter-themed Christmas Tree
I collaborated with Oriental trading- which is one of my favorite places to get all holiday and party decor! I actually did a Harry potter themed Easter basket this year so I had a few things left over that I incorporated into my tree!
They have lots of Harry Potter-themed items! I could have just purchased them all! If you are a Harry potter fan, you might already have a few of these props!
- sorting hat
- nimbus
- house banners
- wood blanks
- suckers
- spiders
- cardboard car
- scarves (Ravenclaw, Gryffindor scarves, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin!)
- cage
- White envelopes
- white deer (patronus)
- Luna glasses
- Clip on candles
- mini suitcase
- Owl stuffed animal
- Snake
- Wand
- Harry Potter glasses
- Kraft paper roll
- styrofoam cake
- vinyl
- black yarn
Make the Harry Potter decorations!
As with everything I do, I have to make some of my own one-of-a-kind decorations to make it original! And these were so fun to create!
Wood quotes
The main part of the tree is the quotes! I used these wood blanks and added some brown on the edges to looks aged and then added brown vinyl quotes on them!
Golden Snitches
I created gold snitches to hang all over the tree! Gold ornaments with wings! (you can get the snitch wing printables here!)
I also used the printable for Honeydukes to add it to the sucker!
Shrunken Head
Another fun element is the shrunken head from the knight bus! Oriental trading actually had a shrunken head but I wanted to DIY my own and ended up braiding black yarn (I doubled up some strands to make some thick) I printed off his head and glued it to a wood ornament and hot glued on the braids!
Flying Car ornament
I assembled the cardboard car- It’s actually a gift box! And printed out the faces of Harry and Ron driving the flying car and glued them to the windshield!
Harry Potter Trolley
I wrapped a cardboard box in brown kraft paper and painted on straps to look more like a Harry Potter trunk! If you google, you can find a Daily Prophet newspaper you and print off and then add an owl to the cage to create the whole little trolley cart that is ready to go to 9 3/4 train station!
Christmas Stockings
I wanted the stockings to look like the sweaters that Ron’s mother knitted the boys for Christmas! Traced an R and H on some paper and used hot glue to attach some thick yarn! Cut out around and glue onto the stockings (if only I knew how to knit myself!)
Envelopes
I strung up 24 envelopes! Each envelope was distressed with watered-down brown paint. I then cut out a Harry Potter stamp with my mint machine so I could just stamp all the fronts! I did wax seals on the box!
Giant glasses and lighting bolt
You can also cut out big giant circles out of cardboard to create glasses! I have the iconic glasses all over the tree but they kind of blend in when on the tree, so I wanted a pair to really pop! Gold glitter paper is the lighting bolt!
Hargrid’s cake
My very last DIY project was Harry’s cake! I decided last minute that I needed a Happee Christmas sign- and I decided to make a fake cake out of styrofoam that says Happy Christmas instead of Happee birthday harry!
I found a styrofoam texture cream that I covered the cake with. Then painted it pink! in a cup, I mixed green paint with some of the textured material and put it in a sandwich baggie. I snipped a corner so I could use it like a piping bag and then just wrote the words on the cake!
Setting up the Christmas Tree
It’s hard to believe, but there is no real ornaments or ribbon on this tree! I wrapped the house scarves around the tree to create the look of ribbon! I bought two Hufflepuff scarves to wrap around the bottom since it’s the widest part! The snitches are the only real ornaments! You could buy ornament balls in all the house colors! I wanted to try the balloon hack where I used gold balloons to create the look of real big ornaments! They deflated after a few days but look great for the pictures!
After I added the scarves, I added the banners in each section. Then I put the snake by the Slytherin scarf.
I added the quote boards all around the tree and then added each prop next to them!
Then, of course, I added the sorting hat as the tree topper-(as well as some Flying Keys!) You, of course, could put up floating candles above the tree! Whenever I see this hat, I just hear “GRYFFINDOR!”
Under the tree was our illustrated Harry Potter books as well as wizard chess that my son has and loves!
And let’s not forget the fireplace! Lots of letters coming out of the fireplace! They are just taped up with some clear fishing line!
Another fun element are these amazing Harry potter prints I got off Etsy!
I didn’t want to spend the money to print them big so I found this awesome website that will adjust it so you can print out a big print with your regular printer! You just have to print, trim, and then assemble!
Oriental Trading has large gold frames! You could make yourself a whole Hogwarts-themed gallery wall!
Floating Candles
Since the ceiling was full of keys, and the fireplace was full of envelopes, I didn’t want to add floating candles to it as well! I found these awesome candles that clip on your tree (they come with a remote!) So instead of floating above the tree, they float all around the tree!
But if you want to create the cool night sky effect like in the great hall- Oriental trading has this enchanted plastic roll! You could cover the ceiling and then hang down the candles!
Harry Potter-themed Christmas tree
Okay! Time to dump the rest of the photos! I will tell you the one thing I forgot to add is a sock with the sign Dobby is free! I have the cut file but totally spaced it!
I didn’t have a big Hedwig- but I love these little owls that I placed all around the tree!
Too busy to get crafting today? No problem! Pin this post to remind yourself about this project later! Sharing my projects helps me reach more people, allowing me to continue sharing free content!
