These fun and unique DIY Valentine’s Day shirt ideas will not only save you money but also make your Valentine’s Day celebrations even more special. So grab your scissors, some fabric glue, and let’s get crafting!
DIY Valentine’s Day shirt ideas

Supplies to make Valentine’s shirts
I will list specifics under each shirt but I wanted to mention the stuff I use the most-
This fabric glue I used in 4 of the shirts! It’s great! It’s washable, doesn’t dry hard, and holds up!
Everyone I used is from Hobby Lobby. They have a great selection- long sleeve short sleeve, hoodies, kids sizes, and in so many colors!

I know we are making many different shirts- but that doesn’t mean you can’t take each of these ideas and apply to them a fun pillow, hat, tote bag etc! Hobby Lobby has a great variety of supplies.

Iron on letters
Shirt idea #1
Let’s start with the easiest (although all these shirts are pretty easy!) Iron on letters! Hobby Lobby has a whole aisle with premade patches and letters! They had so many cool options!

The letters are fun because you can create your own sayings- but i chose this adorable preassembled LOVE. The hardest part was picking what color sweater to put it on! It looked good on pink, gray and white!

These were so easy to apply. They have a sticky back so it was easy to place perfectly without them sliding around.

I followed the instructions on the back which included covering it with a cloth and pressing it with an iron. so easy and you are left with the cutest sweater!

This would make the cutest girls’ night craft! Gather a bunch of fun patches and words/phrases and have everyone bring a sweater to DIY their own fun Valentine’s shirt! You can return any unused patches to Hobby Lobby.
Heart Pom Pom Shirt
Shirt idea #2
Let’s grab some pom poms for this next cute shirt!

Supplies to make this shirt:
- Fabric Glue
- Pom Poms -Hobby lobby has lots of pom poms in different sized and colors!
I went with a simple heart- but you could spell out love or XOXO. I traced a heart on a piece of paper and slide it between the shirt layers. I centered it the best I could and then added a line of fabric glue around.
Then I just placed pom poms all around. After it was filled up, I placed a book on top to keep all the pom poms nice and secure while the glue dried!

I love how it turned out and I know my little kids would have loved the softness of the pom poms!

I think this technique would be so cute with some big red pom poms on a white pillow! That might be my next DIY!
Fabric heart Decal
Shirt idea #3
This next shirt has so many possibilities! I grabbed a cute gingham bandana but you could use any cute fabric from Hobby Lobby or dip in your fabric stash!

I cut out a heart with paper to get it the right size. I used that as a template to cut out the fabric heart.
There are a couple of different ways to attach it. You could use the fabric glue. You could hand stitch with some fun embroidery floss. You could use a fabric Heat n Bond that you iron onto the fabric, cut out the design and then iron it onto your shirt/sweater. Or you could just sew it on!
Sewing it on was easy and that was the option I chose, but if you are doing a smaller shirt it might be harder to get the needle around without sewing the front of the shirt to the back so keep that in mind!

The heart was super easy but you could do the word LOVE and have each letter in a different fabric!

Hobby Lobby had gingham ribbon that matched perfectly so I made some bows to go with this sweater!

Valentine Bow shirt
Shirt idea #4
I have been obsessed with bows this year! Hobby Lobby had the cutest bow garland. I know they went fast at our store, so if you can’t find it, you could create this shirt with ribbon instead!

I snipped off one little bow- still leaving six for my garland. Then I used the fabric glue to attach it. I did place a book on top of this one as well to keep it nice and snug while the glue dried!

As I mentioned, you could grab a satin ribbon or velvet fabric and tie up a bow for this shirt! (and make a matching one for your hair while you are at it!)

I made this version for my niece but I want to cut off another bow and put it on a gray sweater for me!
Puffy paint
Shirt idea #5
I couldn’t not make one with puff paint! There is a whole aisle at Hobby Lobby with so many colors and even some that SPARKLE!

I created a template to trace since I didn’t want to mess up. After centering the paper in the shirt, I just went over the design with red paint! This does need 24 hours to dry so keep that in mind but it turned out so cute!

You can print out the HEART TEMPLATE HERE

The puff paint does leave a raised surface so keep that it mind if the person who you are making it for has sensory issues! It might bother them.
Love Yarn shirt
Shirt idea #6
This little love shirt is so cute! using the same fabric glue as before, I bought a yarn that was a bit thicker than regular yarn.

I laid out the yarn in a saying I liked. Since it’s yarn, I wanted it to be a cursive word so it would be easier to glue on. Once I had it how I liked it, I lifted up each section and put some glue underneath it.
AND just like before- I placed a book on top until the glue dries. I was a little a bit worried about how the yarn would hold up so I took a needle and white thread and tacked down the word. Yarn ends fray so I made sure to stitch them especially.

Try switching it up! Red sweater with white yarn. Red sweater with pink yarn. White sweater with red yarn! So many cute options!

I’ve seen these cute little sweaters with the first letter of the kids name as well!
Heat transfer vinyl (2 ways!)
Shirt idea #7
Now don’t stop reading now! You might see this heading and think, I don’t have a cricut or a silhouette cameo so skip! BUT I have an easy option for you!
Heat transfer vinyl version #1

If you don’t have an electronic cutter, you can just cut your own designs! I printed out an XO from my computer and then taped it to some PUFF heat transfer vinyl. Use your scissors and cut around each letter.
The bonus of doing XOXO is that you don’t have to worry about what side of the vinyl is the correct side! But if you choose another word, make sure you have the right direction!

I used Sublimation tape to keep the letters all lined up and from curling. Then press with an iron! (The temperature settings are on the vinyl!)

This red on red is so cool in person! The words are puffy and stand off the fabric- BUT so hard to capture in photographs!

This is my Valentine’s outfit! I made a cute little bow for my hair with some extra ribbon!

You could also use this fun patterned vinyl and cut out a big heart for a totally cute and easy shirt.

Heat transfer vinyl #2
And of course, you can use the heat transfer vinyl with an electronic cutter. Upload a cute design to your software, cut it out, weed it out, and press it to your shirt!
If you need help with Heat transfer vinyl I have a tutorial here!

More Valentine’s Shirt options
I just showed you 7 ways to jazz up a boring shirt and make it festive for Valentine’s Day- but Hobby Lobby has a whole aisle of tie-dye liquids and fabric markers that you could also use! SO MANY OPTIONS!
AND make sure to think outside of the box! All these ideas can be adapted to fit any event. Green shamrock pom poms or a yarn shirt that says lucky. A cute puff paint easter egg. Letter stickers that spell out THANKS or BOO. An orange fabric pumpkin! You can do ALL the HOLIDAYS!
