This fun black scratch pumpkin craft will be a hit with kids and adults alike! Ditch the pumpkin guts and let’s get creative!

This black scratch art project is one of the favorites in my kids craft camp series. So I thought I would adapt it to turn it into a fun Halloween craft!
I don’t love the mess of carving pumpkins, so I’m always looking for ways to have fun with pumpkins, while avoiding the guts. So this project is just that- a fun pumpkin project that is unique to
Supplies to make the black scratch art
- Black acrylic paint
- dish soap
- paint brush
- pumpkin
- skewer
How to create a black scratch art pumpkin
You will need a clean, dry pumpkin to start.
Grab a plate and pour some black acrylic paint on it. Add some dish soap. It’s hard to tell you how much since I don’t measure, but it’s about 1/4 of the how much paint I added. Mix it together.

Taking your paint brush, add on a nice light coat of the paint. If you have any clumps, it won’t scratch off evenly.

Let the first coat dry. If it’s splotchy or you still see some orange, add another coat.
It should have a matte finish.

Once you are ready, grab a skewer or nail or something with a point and start scratching off the paint! The orange pumpkin will start shining through!
It doesn’t come off as easily as it does on the paper, but it still works great!

You can write messages, draw pictures, or carve a Jack-o’-lantern face into it!
Be Creative- you don’t have to use black paint! Pick any color of acrylic paint!

You are left with a totally fun pumpkin to display all Octover long!
