Looking for a fun Addams Family Halloween decoration? This DIY Cousin Itt is one of my favorite creepy-but-fun Halloween crafts! With a simple tomato cage, a grass skirt, and a few accessories, you can turn inexpensive supplies into an adorable Cousin Itt decoration for your front porch.

This project is surprisingly easy to make and creates a BIG Halloween statement without requiring a lot of crafting skills.
If you love The Addams Family, Halloween decorations, and easy DIY projects, you definitely need to add this Cousin Itt craft to your Halloween to-do list!
I have always loved Addams Family but I was today years old when I realized Cousin Itt had two Ts!
DIY Cousin Itt Supplies
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own Cousin Itt:
I did hit up the dollar tree to get the raffia skirt and sunglasses.
- Tomato cage
- Ball or a bowl
- 2 Raffia grass skirt or grass table skirts
- brown fabric (optional)
- Black hat
- Sunglasses
- Zip ties or floral wire
- Scissors
- Optional: small table, stool, or other base
The exact amount of raffia or grass skirt material you’ll need will depend on how large your tomato cage is and how full you want your Cousin Itt to be.
Mine is smaller- It’s about 3 1/2 feet tall. and I used two grass skirts.
How to Make Cousin Itt
Step 1: Start With a Tomato Cage
Turn a tomato cage upside down so the widest part is at the bottom.
This creates the perfect cone-shaped body for Cousin Itt.
You don’t need to build a complicated frame—the tomato cage does almost all of the work for you! I just added a ball to the top and duct taped it to the wires of the tomato cage. You could also grab a bowl from the Dollar Tree and use that to. You just want a round shape for the top.

If you’re making this as an outdoor Halloween decoration, choose a sturdy tomato cage that can stand up to the weather.
Step 2: Brown fabric
I only had two skirts, and I really wanted it to look full. So I added a layer of brown/tan fabric underneath to hid any empty spots. If you have enough raffia, you might not need the fabric.

Step 3: Add the Grass Skirt
Now comes the fun part!
Take your grass skirt and begin attaching the raffia strands to the tomato cage. You can use zip ties or small pieces of floral wire to secure the grass skirt material to the frame.
Work your way around the tomato cage, covering the entire frame.

Once skirt went around 1 1/2 times for the bottom layer, and then I cinched up the second layer to go around twice.
You want the raffia to hang down far enough that it completely hides the tomato cage underneath.

Tip: The more grass skirt material you use, the fuller your Cousin Itt will look.
Continue adding the grass skirt material until you have covered the entire tomato cage.
Step 4: Add Cousin Itt’s Hat
Once your tomato cage is completely covered, it’s time to give Cousin Itt his signature look.
Place a black bowler-style hat on top.
Depending on the size and shape of your tomato cage, you may need to secure the hat with a zip tie, hot glue, or another method so it doesn’t blow away.
Step 5: Add Sunglasses
You can’t forget the sunglasses!
Place a pair of small dark sunglasses toward the front of Cousin Itt.
I added a piece of duct tape on each side of the sunglasses underneath the raffia directly to the fabric so you can’t see it.
The sunglasses instantly make the decoration recognizable and give him that classic Cousin Itt look.
Your DIY Cousin Itt Is Finished!
That’s really all there is to it!
A tomato cage covered in raffia or a grass skirt suddenly becomes a giant DIY Cousin Itt Halloween decoration.
I love how much personality the sunglasses and hat add. You can make him as big, shaggy, silly, or spooky as you want. You can also trim any pieces if you want it more uniform!

Easy Halloween Decoration on a Budget
One of my favorite things about this project is that you don’t need expensive Halloween decorations to make a big impact.
A tomato cage is transformed into a fun character with a few inexpensive supplies. If you can find a grass skirt at a party store, thrift store, or after a luau-themed party, even better!
It’s a great example of how a little creativity can turn ordinary items into something completely different.
Tips for Making Your Cousin Itt
Secure everything outdoors. If you’re putting Cousin Itt on your porch, make sure the hat, sunglasses, and body are secured so wind doesn’t send him down the street.
Make him different sizes. Try using different sizes of tomato cages to create a whole Cousin Itt family!

Make a Whole Addams Family Display
If you’re going all-in on the Halloween decorations, Cousin Itt would be adorable alongside other spooky Addams Family-inspired decorations.
You could create a creepy front porch with:
- This Addams family sign printable
- Thing (creepy hand next to ITT would be cool.)
- Build the whole Addams Family Manor
Cousin Itt would make a particularly fun addition because he’s a little unexpected!
