Supplies to make a ghost print
- Potato
- A sharp knife (adults only!)
- white paint (or gray paint)
- Black Cardstock
- Black marker or paint
- green marker or paint
You are going to want to look for a potato that is longer and less round in shape (if that makes any sense!)
If you don’t have black paper, stamp with a light gray onto white for a ghostly effect!
How to make a kids craft: Ghost print with a potato
Step 1: Cut the potato
(This part needs to be done by an adult!)
Cut a potato in half so you have a flat surface. You can leave it as is for a simple oval ghost shape, or carefully carve a wavy bottom edge for that classic ghosty look.

I used the end of my marker to press in a ghost face but you can cut it out with a knife or add the details after stamping.

Step 2: Spread out the paint
To get a really clean stamp, you will need to take a paintbrush and spread out the paint so when you stamp the potato, the paint will cover it completely.

Step 3: paint the potato
Placing your fingers on both sides, set the potato down into the paint and move it around a little bit.
There might be a few sections that don’t have any paint on it. If that’s the case, you can take a paintbrush and cover any missing spots.
I had to use a q-tip to get out any excess paint out of the grooves of the eyes and mouth.

Step 4: Stamp
Press it firmly onto your paper to create your ghost shape. Each stamp will be slightly unique, which makes them extra fun!

I dipped the potato into paint each time I stamped. If any section doesn’t get covered with paint, you can fill it in with a paintbrush.

Step 5: Let dry
This didn’t take too long- it just depends on how thick the paint is!
Step 6: Embellish
Once the white paint dries, use black paint or a marker to draw little eyes and a mouth. You can make your ghosts look surprised, spooky, or even silly, depending on the expression.

Stamp several ghosts floating across the page for a whole haunted scene. Add details like a moon, stars, or a pumpkin patch in the background to complete your artwork
Be creative
I used the same potato that I stamped on the ghosts with and carved out the sides to create a spider body shape! Stamped that onto a paper and then added some red eyes! Once it was dry, I pushed some black pipe cleaners (fuzzy sticks) into the sides to create the long creepy spider legs!

Instead of just making a pretty picture, try stamping on a notecard or a gift bag for a perfect fall gift!
Why Kids Love It
Potato stamping is messy in the best way—it’s tactile, colorful, and gives instant results. Plus, kids get to feel like little artists as they make patterns and experiment with colors.
Tips for Success:
- Younger kids can keep it simple with just ghost faces, while older kids might enjoy adding hats, bow ties, or googly eyes for extra character.
- If you’re stamping on colored paper (like purple or black), use a thicker layer of white paint so the ghosts pop.
- Try other shapes! Potatoes make great stamps for pumpkins, bats, and candy corn too.
