What is cornhole?
Legend has it: A 14th-century cabinet maker named Matthias Kuepermann invented the game after seeing children throw rocks into a groundhog’s hole. Kuepermann wanted to create a safer way for the children to play. Bags of corn were filled instead. (which is where the name cornhole comes from!)
Cornhole is a lawn game where players take turns throwing bean bags at a raised, angled board with a hole in it.
Cornhole is seriously one of our FAVORITE family games to play. We usually have big tournaments during camping and we ALWAYS forget how many feet the boards have to be apart. And when you are camping- you usually don’t have wifi to google it! So I created this free Cornhole rules printable.
How to use this cornhole printable
If you are looking for a great printer to use – I love my HP! I wrote up a whole post about why I love my printer and how to get the best prints!
I decided to laminate the printable so it would stay looking nice as we went from campground to campground. You can attach it with some poster putty and stick it on the underside of the cornhole board. There is also an SVG of this design so you could cut it out of vinyl and add it on the corn hold board.
Another option is to put it in a cute frame and hang it on your back deck for cute porch decor! If you have a set place to that you play cornhole, this is such a cute option!
This is a quick rundown of the rules. The boards need to be 27 feet apart. Each team gets 4 bags to throw. You can step the to the front edge of the cornhole boards. You alternate throwing the cornhole bags with an under-hand release. If it lands on the board, that is one point. If the bag goes into the hole, that is 3 points! Bags that lean against the board but touches the ground is no point! First pitch goes to the team who scored last round.
If you have a situation arise like cancellation scoring, foul lines, and any rule violations you can see whole list of rules- You can go HERE!
I will tell you one adaptation we do that makes the game so much fun. We HAVE to get 21 exactly. You can’t go over. So if you are at 19- and get a bag in the hole- (Making it 22) You have to go back down to eleven the next round and continue play. It just adds a lot more strategy to the end.
Cornhole tips
A great cornhole tip is to measure out a piece of rope or yarn that is 27 feet. I have it mounted to the underside of the cornhole board. (you can see it on the picture above!)You can just pull it out and measure to make sure the distance is perfect when setting up without having to go try to find a measuring tape! This is a perfect solution when you are out and about instead of playing at home!
I also just bought these cornhole lights so we can mount them to our board. Some of our tournaments last way after the sunsets so the lights should help see where the hole is!
