Looking for a Valentine’s Day art project that’s simple, beautiful, and perfect for kids? This watercolor heart Valentine picture using tape resist is an easy and creative way to make stunning Valentine artwork with minimal supplies. The tape resist technique creates crisp heart shapes that really pop once the tape is removed—making it a fun surprise for kids and adults alike!

Why Try a Tape Resist Watercolor Valentine Craft?
Tape resist watercolor art is a great introduction to watercolor painting for kids. The tape blocks paint from certain areas, creating clean shapes and designs once it’s removed.
This Valentine’s craft is:
- Easy for kids of all ages (even adults!)
- Low mess and beginner-friendly
- Great for classrooms or home art time
- Unique every time
Plus, it makes a beautiful keepsake or handmade Valentine decoration.
Supplies Needed
To create your watercolor heart tape resist Valentine picture, gather the following:
- Watercolor paper or cardstock
- Tape (Washi tape is a great alternative as well!)
- Watercolor paints
- Paintbrushes
- Cup of water
- Paper towels
- Pencil (optional)
I actually bought this tape to create a stain-glassed window in my craft room but didn’t read the description and it was way too thin. So I was trying to come up with some cool ways to use! I used this same technique to create a bingo card for 2026-

and I loved how it turned out! I wanted to keep painting- and Valentines was coming up! Thus- a fun watercolor heart project!

How to Make a Watercolor Heart Tape Resist Picture
Step 1: Create the Heart with Tape
Lightly draw a heart shape in the center of your paper if needed. Use tape to outline the heart shape, pressing it down firmly to prevent paint from bleeding underneath.

Your heart will have a geometric design to it.

You can add as much tape as you want. More tape equals more sections to paint in! I also like to add a piece of tape around each edge to frame in the design.
Step 2: Paint with Watercolors
Using watercolors, paint over the entire page—including right over the taped heart. Encourage kids to blend colors, splatter paint, or try different watercolor techniques for a fun background.
*You can use crayons, markers, or acrylic paint! Whatever craft medium you have!

I started by painting the heart design first with all the pinks and reds to make it stand out. Then I painted in the background in tones of purple to help pop the heart!

Step 3: Let the Paint Dry
Allow the painting to dry completely. This is important so the tape doesn’t tear the paper when removed.
Step 4: Peel Off the Tape
Carefully remove the tape to reveal a clean white heart in the center of the painting. This is always the most exciting part!
(Honestly, I think it looks so cool with the black tape on it! Like a stained glass!)

Look how cool it looks!

VARIATION:
If you have little kids, you might just want to have them add the tape with no rhyme or reason (or you add the tape beforehand.)

Then you kiddo can paint the pattern however they like! No rhyme or reason.

Once it’s dry and you take the paint off, you can cut out hearts to decorate the watercolor sheet. I cut out a heart from the middle of a pink scrapbook paper and left the negative space to go over the geometric design. I added some foam circles so it sits off the paper a little bit for added dimension.

So there you go- two fun ways to create a Valentine’s themed picture!

Ways to Customize Your Valentine Heart Art
- Add words like “LOVE” or “Be Mine” inside the heart
- Use pinks, reds, and purples for a Valentine color palette
- Sprinkle salt on wet paint for extra texture
- Turn finished art into Valentine cards or wall decor
Each piece turns out unique, making this a perfect Valentine art project for kids.
Perfect for Classrooms & Valentine’s Day Decor
This watercolor tape resist heart craft works well for:
- Classroom Valentine’s Day activities
- Process art for kids
- Handmade Valentine decorations
- Art lessons on resist techniques
It’s simple enough for young kids and still beautiful enough for older kids and adults.
Watercolor not just for Valentines day
And of course, you can do this technique for any occasion. Tape off a 4-leaf clover for Valentine’s Day, a bunny shape for Easter, etc! Here is a picture I did with mountains and the sun!

I think this one is my favorite! It turned out so cool!
