the other day i scored this cute desk..….
i’ve been searching for one for my daughters room. (she had a folding table in her room)
so i pounced….
and gave it a little makeover.
and one can of white primer, and 3 cans of yellow krylon spray paint later….(sun yellow)
i love spray paint.
–it takes little time. (okay..you spend time waiting for it to dry between coats)but i’m a multitasker so it’s not big thing for me)
–it reaches the hard to reach spots with ease.
–it smells good (ha!)
reasons i hate spray paint
–it has to be warm enough…and i live in idaho. so i literally just let the projects pile up and the weather gets warm and i spend the entire day spray painting.
–overspray (i don’t mind it so much. my husband does. his dirt bike has never been prettier in my honest opinion.)
but you know…i love me a little something extra.
so i ended up painting the sides of the drawer white and adding a fun patterns.
the large polka dots are a cutting edge stencil (from HERE)
the stripes are just some frog tape taped off…and i have mini polka dot stencil
then on the inside of the big drawer i added another cutting edge stencil surprise! (find it here)
such a fun little pop! I love it so much! Can’t wait until her room is all put together!
psst: fun girl printable from here
and go here to see another version!

Gorgeous colours and love the “surprises” when you open things up. Do you find spray paint quicker? I sometimes find it slower with anything with fiddly moulding.

DANG,,,what an adorable desk! I totally feel ya on the spray painting in Idaho winter/spring dilemma. About 5 yrs. ago we bought a house and after re-doing the flooring we needed to paint a crappy old huge vent cover. My husband totally didn’t have faith in me….but I insisted on doing it myself. Well I took my time, and it was perfectly beautiful….until a couple hours later when it had “dried”, or rather froze. Yeah…I apparently didn’t know it was too cold to spray paint. Whatever though. I’m totally over it….really. You did a great job and the weather didn’t ruin it! I especially love the inside & edges of the drawers!

I spray paint on the grass…or in the back alley…the grass grows and gets cut and the rocks…well, sometime eventually they get moved around to disperse their colouredness. I’ve even spray painted snow (yeah, couldn’t wait for spring…we’re still waiting for the snow to melt away…well, away…I didn’t recognize that stuff the desk is sitting on it’s been so long since I’ve seen grass. But I digress…).
I love the hiddent surprises on & in the drawers. Love the yellow…definately pops! Makes me believe in spring again! (it’s bound to happen sometime…)

it snowed today….ha! so my spray painting is put away for now!

What a beautiful and fun desk! I love the extra special touches you added. I live in Wi and am going to redo my basement craft area this spring…..so like you, I am stacking up items I want to paint and stocking up on spray paint until I can get outside and spray away. What kind of primer do you use on the furniture? I guess I will check to see if I can buy spray primer. I am kinda new to all of this paint transformation stuff.
Kimbo says
i’ve found the best spray paint primer is Kilz…you have to keep shaking it to keep it from getting gritty–but it’s got awesome coverage!!!!

I love the extra touch with the drawers. I have a student desk that is the perfect candidate for something like this!

hello I ve thinking of doing the same thing do u need to prepare the wood atall before like sanding or is there a special paint to use so not for it to peel? x
Kimbo says
sand it first…You can prime with a spray paint (i recommend KILZ)! and light coats of spray paint!!! good luck!

Oh wow that is absolutely gorgeous!! I’m in love with the bright yellow and even more so with the black and white patterns you did on the inside of the drawers, how cool! I love the strong color accents with the red photo frame and the blue lamp base, too. I’d love to post about your awesome make-over project on my blog sometime! Thanks for sharing it, great inspiration!
Brittney says
Hi! This is so cute! You didn’t have to sand it down or anything? Just primer and spray paint?
Kimbo says
Depends on the finish. This one was ready to go. If it’s a smooth, glossy finish you might want to sand it!
