I have been wanting to try out sting art for such a long time…..but let’s be real. I don’t have the patience to try to hammer in 100 nails all nice and straight (and I can only imagine the noise! headache! ) I’ve got a fun and easy hack using FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam: Sheets! I think these are super kid friendly option…but you will want to be careful because of the pins! Adult supervision!
Here is what you need!
- FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam: Sheet 1/2″ x 12″ x 36″
- FloraCraft Smooth Finish® Paintable Coating
- FloraCraft® StyroCutter® Plus or FoamCutter®
- Template of what you want to create
- Sharpie Marker
- Acrylic Paint (I chose turquoise)
- Straight Pins
- embroidery thread or yarn
- Paintbrush
- Fine-Grit Sandpaper
- fabric
- hot glue
Start by cutting out your shape. We did a heart and an earth. The earth is actually a FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam: disc–so if you don’t want to cut anything out do something with a circle shape!
I did these two different ways…(both worked!)
#1: Paint. I started by using the smooth finish and covering the disc. This helps it become less porous so the pins stand more upright! Then painted.
At the craft store you will find pins with all sorts of different colored tops. So pick what one works best for your project.
Using a template put pins around the edges.
Grab your string and go around the edges first a few times to get a good outline. Then fill in criss cross between the pins. (My 8 year old totally helped me make this!)!
Turned out so fun!
Now the second way we did…the heart!
We chose to wrap this one in fabric and just hot glued it onto the back.
Then add pins and strings the same way! The fabric also holds the pins up nice and straight! You will want to make sure not to pick a fabric that is too patterned or you won’t be able to see the string!
There you go! Two fun string art knock offs! What one would you try?
