You might not know what a Potato Bag is….I didn’t even know until a few months ago and I live in Idaho–the land of Potatoes. But now that I use it…I will never go back.
This bag is a bag you put your potatoes in, throw it (or place it) in the microwave, heat, and the end result is super fluffy, soft, baked potatoes. I mean like awesome…and to make one is super easy.
You will need two pieces of COTTON fabric size 22×13
and one piece of COTTON batting size.22×13
MUST BE COTTON!
(I buy this stuff–it makes about 5 or 6 potato bags depending on the size)
You are going to put right sides together of the fabric. Then lay the cotton on top.
You are going to sew up the two end sides.
And then sew the edges again to make a more finished edge (you can also trim if needs be)
Now, pay attention. This is the part that is hard to explain–look closely at the picutures.
You are going to fold over one side about 1 1/2 inches down.
Then you are going to bend up the other side to match up with it (this is going to create the flap that closes it)
Now you are going to sew up the sides.
now you can trim these edges if you you need to…
Then you are going to turn it right side out.
and sew up the sides one more time. (this makes it so no unfinished edges are visible!
To Use: Wash Potatoes. Dry Potatoes. Wrap in Paper Towel (no need to poke any holes) This bag fits 4 medium potatoes. If you have a bigger microwave and a bigger family…you can make your bag bigger. Cook according to the microwave directions. (mine has a potato button.) You can also cook your corn on the cob or heat up tortilla shells.
Any lots of fun fabric can be used!
I love them!
If you can’t sew they actually sell these in stores now!

Kimbo West says
THey can totally be washed! That is the best part about 100% Cotton!

I am featuring this on my blog today!
Mammy Made says
ooh this is brilliant!! when it says wrap in paper towel, does that mean the potatoes will be inside paper towel inside the bag or is the paper towel just to dry them off? and can you cook more than one at a time? im definitely going to make a few of these 🙂

I never tried baking potatoes in the microwave, how many minutes does it take to cook? And, as Mammy Made already asked, do we leave them in the paper towel, or do we put the potatoes directly in the bag?
Thanks for this great tutorial, I can't wait to make it.

You have such creative hands, Kimbo! This can also be used not only for potatoes but also with other round fruits and vegetables. I think apples and tomatoes would also look good in this bag. And it’s also very easy to make! I’ll be making one for my next family picnic. I’m sure my mom would love to bring our produce in style!

shorter end sides…
K. McCarthy says
When you say, "sew up the two end sides" is that the longer side or the shorter side?
K. McCarthy says
Thank you! Making them now.
Kimbo West says
you just sew a strip of coordinating fabric on the top of one side (the one that will be outside)

How do you make one like the ones in the bottom pic?? With both fabrics showing? Love these!!

I bought a smaller size one at a farmer’s market and followed the instructions to place a potato in a wet paper towel and microwave. The thing went up in flames!! What do you think caused that?
Thanks.
Kimbo says
nothing is supposed to be wet! dry paper towel and make sure the potato is dry!!!
carolnybender says
So obviously the typed instructions that came with it were WRONG! Too bad. The potato came out fine.

Thanks for the tutorial on how to make these 🙂 I had one but it burned. Oppsseee 🙂 I baked 1 batch of potatoes in it, then quickly took those out and put another batch of potatoes in it to cook. It was towards the end of the 2nd batch of potatoes that it started smoking. So my advice is to let it COOL COMPLETELY if you plan on making more than 1 batch of potatoes in it.

Do you need to use cotton thread as well? It didn’t say, and I wasn’t sure if the thread made that big of a deal. Sorry, i am making gifts and want to make sure I don’t start a fire! LOL Thanks

I appreciate the directions for the potato bag, but I want to let you know that if you will check The Warm Company’s website, they say that Warm and White should not be used in a microwave, because it has something in it that isn’t food safe. A better product is Wrap ‘n’ Zap or some of the Quilter’s dream batting that is free of scrim or glue. I don’t want to be critical, but I learned this a while back and shared it with my quilt guild.

Awesome! THanks for the update!
