Supplies Needed for Paper Weaving Heart Craft
This heart weaving craft uses simple materials you probably already have:
- Red, pink, and white construction paper (I used both typing paper and cardstock and both worked great!)
- Scissors and/or paper trimmer
- Glue stick or tape

Optional: stickers, glitter, or markers for decorating
How to do Paper Weaving
Follow these easy steps to create woven paper hearts for Valentine’s Day.
- Cut one piece of paper
Take scissors or a paper trimmer and cut strips without cutting all the way through. I leave the last inch intact. I tried to make each strip even by using the lines on my cutter.

2. Cut the weaving strips
I cut strips using a contrasting color to make the weaving pattern pop. I tried to make these the same width as the piece of paper. You can cut all the way through these to create strips. Make sure they are long enough to go through your paper.

3. Weave the strips
Weave the paper strips over and under the slits. Slid up to the top.

4. Add another strip
Alternating the pattern with the next strip going under and over in the opposite strips to the previous piece of paper. Push up to the make it nice and snug.

5. Repeat
Weave the paper strips over and under the slits, alternating the pattern with each strip until the paper is covered.

6. Secure the strips
Glue or tape the ends of the strips on the back. Trim any extra paper if needed.

7. Cut out heart
This paper looks so cool as is! You could use it as a placemat or add letters for a fun banner. But I wanted to cut out a heart for Valentine’s Day. I was worried that any little pieces would fall off, so I glued a piece of paper to the back before I cut out the heart with scissors.

Valentine Paper Weaving Heart Ideas
This paper weaving heart craft can be customized in so many fun ways:
You can create a really cool effect by cutting squiggle shapes instead of straight lines. Weave the same way.

- Change up the colors.
- Change up the sizes of the paper stripes to make it look more plaid.
- Weave in a few different colors

I turned this one into a cute bookmark just using scraps!

Tips for Different Age Groups
- Preschoolers: Use wider slits and fewer weaving strips.
- Elementary kids: Smaller strips of paper and adding more than 2 colors.
- Older kids: Introduce color patterns or repeating designs.
Since we are doing these for Valentine’s, we made a heart pattern. It turned out so cool!

Adjusting the size and spacing makes this craft work for almost any age.
Why Kids Love This Valentine’s Craft
Kids love watching the heart pattern come together as they weave. It feels like a puzzle, but with a colorful, Valentine’s Day twist. Plus, they get to proudly show off a heart they made all by themselves.
