You know this part of cast away…Where Tom hanks in all his shirtless glory is feeling like he invented the wheel because he had made fire.
That is me with this post.
It’s kind of been on my sewing bucket list. Let me tell you how I sew:
I lay out stuff and mimic them. I sketch on napkins and I chew on my bottom lip while I’m trying to figure it out.Â
It’s super “professional” i.e. you aren’t allowed to look inside of my projects….(I don’t have a serger. Husband keeps thinking I need to buy one…but it intimidates me) So a coat just seems like super time consuming project.
and I’m lazy. But I’ve been wanting to make one…and since Halloween is coming up…and it’s pretty pointless to buy a costume because here in Idaho it just gets covered up with a jacket….So I thought a jacket that doubles as a costume would be a hit–plus it’s not too themey that you can wear it all year long! Supplies were 1 1/2 yard fabric (inside was soft sweatshirt material) and outside was a herringbone that I bought oh about 5 years ago. (hoarder alert!) I used buttons…some iron on heat transfer from Expressions Vinyl and yarn for the tail (which is removable!)
basics….(don’t you worry. this tutorial isn’t really tutorial since I Like to wing it…..You could try THIS pattern if you need more step by step.)
attached the sleeves at the shoulders to the back/front .
Then I skip a bunch of steps like hems and buttons and pockets and sleeves and hood…and took this picture of how to do the ears….I added iron on vinyl to the top….
Then I thought it would be fun to add my own fox pattern on the inside of the jackets. Just found a fox silhouette I like and cut them out.
and then used an iron to press them on…
THIS is the Exact color vinyl I used
and added onto the pockets as well!
Then made a tail~I found THIS tutorial It’s pretty much the coolest thing ever! It’s a braid of yarn–and then you make these tassels and brush them out with a dog hair brush to make them all poofy.Â
Then tie them on the braid!
Then I tied the braid to an alligator clip and hot glued one more tassel on top.Â
Add some fun little girl fox makeup…
and you have yourself a fun little fox costume!Â
(I know she looks all serious…but her fox makeup when she smiled was so funny looking!)
I love that you can take any jacket and turn it into any fun animals…a lion…a bear (cute pom poms for ears!) This coat was originally going to be a cat…then she changed her mind. cause she’s 7.
this is her being a fox….
