I have always cruised right by the stained glass/mosaic tile aisle at Hobby Lobby! I had never tried my hand at it and was just intimating! But NOT TODAY! I finally ventured down and grabbed all the supplies to make a perfect DIY Mosaic tile planter for spring! On top of that- a new craft obsession! I had so much fun making this that I went back and grabbed tons more colors of tile and wood blanks to create ALL THE THINGS! So proceed with caution because you will become addicted too!
Supplies to make Mosaic tile planter
I purchased everything I needed to do mosaic tile from Hobby Lobby. They have one whole aisle devoted to it! Then I just swung by the flowers section to grab some pots (or you could go to the unfinished wood section to grab a sign!
Here is what I grabbed
- Planter
- Tile Adhesive
- Tile Grout
- Tile Sealant
- Tiles (sheets or packs)
- tile snippers
- Gloves
- Plastic Baggy

Hobby Lobby had a variety of tiles- sheets in so many colors as well as bags that have precut shapes. There are also a great selection of stones and rocks if you need more round shapes for your design!

When picking out a pot- I wanted the smoothest surface so I wasn’t trying to tile around any lip! The adhesive works well on terra cotta pots as well as wood! Those were the two I tried out!

Of course, you can use these mosaic tiles on a flat wood board to make a fun front door sign or address sign if you don’t want to do a pot! Hobby Lobby had wood frames that would be perfect too!

How to DIY Mosaic tile planter
First things first, you need to sketch out your basic design. There are so many fun options! Flowers were a natural go to, but you could do any fun insects: ladybugs, bumblebees, dragonflies. Or a bird. You could do any fun fruit- like lemon or peaches! Once I started creating, I kept coming up with fun ideas!
You can draw directly on the pots since you are covering it up with tiles!

If you don’t want to deal with cutting tiles- or are doing this with kids- I would 100% recommend using the bags of precut tiles! You can play around with all the fun designs! Kids can even spell out their names!
Here are some ideas I played around with!

Cutting tiles
The first cut of the sheet is the scariest thing! But it cuts so easily!

The tiles can be a bit sharp- so I recommend wearing some gloves. (I know- I don’t have gloves on in the picture! But I can’t push play to take photos or videos with them on!)
I cut the big piece of tile into a smaller piece- Then I put the piece of tile into a gallon size baggie. I then cut the rest of the shapes inside the bag. It keeps any little pieces from flying around!

Applying your tile pieces
Once you have all the pieces cut- I like to lay them out so I can get the basic design! I start with the biggest part of the design (the white daisy) and then I fill in with the next biggest part, the green leaves.
Since this is a curved surface, it’s a little more complicated since you can’t lay it out directly on the project. I just worked on one section at a time.
I apply the adhesive to the spot I want to work on and then apply my tiles. You can also apply the adhesive right on the back of the largest pieces and then apply. The adhesive gets tacky pretty fast so make sure your work in small patches. Once I filled in the area I was working on, the adhesive was holding pretty well so I could turn the pot and work on the next section!

Since this is a curved surface, some of larger pieces don’t lay flat- I had to snip some of the flower petals to angle them around the pot!
TIP: Once I start getting around the back of the pot, I place it on a towel so the tiles don’t scratch my work area and/or get chipped!
The smaller the pieces, it is easiest to put the glue directly onto the pot and then add your pieces!
This part is my favorite! It’s like a puzzle! Finding the perfect piece to fill in the blank spaces!

The adhesive is supposed to be set for 24 hours and dries clear!
Grouting the pot
After the adhesive has set- It’s time to grout! Hobby Lobby has pre-mixed grout or powder grout that you mix with water. I just followed the instructions on the back- add a little water to the powdered grout and stir until mixed. Then spread it on the tiles! Since the tiles have some sharp edges, I just used a popsicle stick to spread it. You want to make sure you are getting it in all the grooves.

I used the popsicle stick to scrap over the pot so there wasn’t to much excess on it. I let it dry for a bit (a few hours) and then wiped over the pot with a barely damp sponge. You are just trying to get the grout off that is on the tile. It still looks a little messy. I let it sit for a few more hours and then take a cloth and rub off the rest of the grout so the tiles are all clean!

Let the grout cure for 24 hours!
TIP: The grout is white, you can add in a little acrylic paint to tint the grout if you want a different look!
Sealing the mosaic pot
I just followed the instructions on the back of the sealant- It says to apply in a well-ventilated area, use a mask, and use gloves! I’m guessing it almost has a resin-type nature to it!
It’s pretty runny so it applies really easily with a paint brush! It does make the tiles a little more matted looking so it’s easy to see where it’s been applied.

Finished DIY Mosaic tile planter
Once it’s all done- FINALLY- I’ts time to add your flowers or plants!

Adapting this to do with kids: I would do this craft with older kids. You can put the tile sheets in a bag and let the kids just hit it to break up the pieces or use the precut tiles. And have kids wear gloves!
Hobby Lobby also has lots of fun mosaic kits you can snag if you have kids what want to do this!
