Colored Pencil Roll

One of my favorite things about being a blogger is getting to try out new craft supplies! And today I have a fun one– DMC has a couple of new materials– mesh fabric and CORK fabric

The mesh is what I used for my project– It comes in a roll of fabric that is a 10 inch by 10 inch sheet. And it’s reversible!! Gold on one side, silver on the other.

The cork is pretty too–has a few flecks of gold in it!

It’s sewable AND stitchable! So I whipped up a fun colored pencil roll! and here’s how!

You’ll need:

DMC Mesh Fabric
DMC embroidery floss in desired colors
Bias tape
Two rectangles of Fabric

I didn’t realize how many amazing colors DMC has! Look at all those pinks!

I didn’t take a lot of photos of me embroidering–basically because I was winging it! I stitched x’s that were 6×6…and the mesh plays with your eyes (or maybe I’m just getting old) so I totally whipped out my OTTLITE to help! It worked awesome for counting out my x’s!

I ended up whip this cute flower! (I stitched on the silver side!) To turn it into the colored pencil roll I trimmed the mesh down to about 6 inches and added some bias tape across the top.

Took a piece of fabric and measured how far apart I wanted each pencil to sit.

Grabbed a piece of fabric that matched the same size (for the back) and more bias tape…pink this time!

and sandwiched them all together and pinned the bias tape around.

Before I added the ribbon to tie around I filled it with colored pencils (I love these fun prismacolor ones!)
Then roll it up and see how much ribbon (or bias tape sewed together) you will need. Then attach.
It’s a perfect little on the go roll! I love how fun the mesh looks with the pencils! And rolls up so nice and small! Pretty little flower!
