Get all the supplies to make this adorable Christmas Ornament Advent Calendar so you can count down the holiday season in style!
I love advent calendars! Christmas can get so busy so I’m always looking for unique ways to celebrate every day in December instead of just one day!
This is one of the best advent calendar ideas because you can customize it to fit your style! You can also use them in a variety of ways!
Supplies needed to make a Christmas Ornament Advent Calendar
I grabbed all the supplies from the Christmas section at Hobby Lobby!
- Clear Plastic Ornaments
- Acrylic Paints in whatever your favorite Christmas colors are!
- String
- Number Stickers
- Christmas ribbon (optional)
- dowel (optional)
- Garland (optional)
- gifts to put inside ornaments
I grabbed two different kinds of clear plastic ornaments in lots of sizes. The first kind is the normal kind, with the opening on the top. The second kind opens right down the middle!
If you want to only put slips of paper inside, you can just buy some regular fun colored ornaments.
If you want to have the option of putting candy or other items inside, grab the other kind. I mixed and matched so some days we will have movies to watch, activities to do, or candy and treats on other days! A variety for my Christmas countdown!
How to paint the ornament
These ornaments are pretty unique because they open up in the middle. This means you can put bigger items inside and get them out easier! But- they only come in clear so we have to add some color!
I just added a few drops of water into the bottle of paint and mixed it to make it a little runnier. Then I poured it right into the ornament. You can put the two halves together and shake them to get them coated easier.
After they are coated, lay them out to dry. You want to make sure they aren’t sitting flat. Add some popsicle sticks or strips of cardboard to create a little stand to let the paint drain out.
They will take about 24 hours to dry. I made the mistake of putting the tops on some of the ornaments and they weren’t fully dried. They stayed wet and all the paint pooled at the bottom of the ornaments!
Add the Advent Numbers
I have a vinyl machine, so you could cut out your own numbers with adhesive vinyl- but Hobby Lobby has so many cute stickers so I just opted for the easiest solution!
What to put in an Advent Ornament
If you want to put actual items inside- here are some fun ideas that are on the smaller side.
- candy
- chapstick
- bath bomb
- balloons
- noisemakers
- gum
- little hand sanitizer or lotion
- crafts (Hobby Lobby has lots of little craft projects for Christmas)
- socks
- stickers
- toys
- A charm bracelet on the first day and give a fun charm each day! Hobby Lobby has a huge jewelry section!
- Make a list of 24 of your favorite Christmas Movies! The whole family can enjoy this one!
- Christmas activities. I have a free printable with all sorts of cool ideas to do all December long!
Hang up the advent ornaments
I just used some clear string from the jewelry section to hang them up. There are three ways to hang them!
The first option- I just attached them with tape right to my mantel! It’s such a cute party of my Christmas decor!
I created the felt Christmas banner because it needed a little something and the felt matched the paint colors perfectly!
The Second option: If you don’t have a mantel, you could just tie them to a dowel and hang them on your wall! They will be ready to use year after year!
The last option is to just hang them all around your Christmas tree! Your kids will have to search around to find the right number!
This is such a fun way to countdown to Christmas! Just open one ornament until Christmas Day!
