This post is part of Melissa’s super fun Summer sewing series!
So today I’m showing you a fun fringe tank that is perfect for summer! Throw it over your swim suit and you are good to go! I love love love fringe and want to wear it on everything!
I bought this shirt because I loved the gray stripes of this shirt. I originally thought it would make a fun pencil skirt….but when I thought of this project—This shirt popped up in my head. Good thing I hoardered it for a year.
To start…I snip off the sleeve and the neck.
I knew I had to take in the sides because my daughter is a skinny minny. So I had her put it on and measured about 3 inches in and sewed it up and snipped off the extra.
After I had it fitting how I wanted I hemmed the sleeves and collar.
Time to work on the fringe. I wanted the fringe to hang pretty long (which is why I started with such a big shirt.) So I trimmed off just the hem. (if it’s too long you can trim off more)
I snipped 1/2 inch pieces halfway up the shirt Then you are going to take each strip and pull on it. Pulling it is going to cause it to curl.
You can actually leave it as is… or take it one step further and add some knots. I knotted two pieces together all along the top. Then added another knot using the left string from the left knot and the right string from the right knot.
Then you decorate the shirt however you want! Heat transfer vinyl or even paint! You can see how I added some fun tulip fabric paint over on Instagram!
The best part about this…is that you since it’s knit you don’t really even have to hem the sleeves and collar. Just take in a little on the sides and you are good to go!
