From intricate designs to inspirational messages, the possibilities for decorating these natural canvases are endless. In this article, we’ll dive into the fascinating world of rock painting and explore the various techniques, tools, and benefits that come along with it. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just looking for a new hobby, let’s uncover the beauty and joy of rock painting.
When I started this roundup, IÂ didn’t realize what an art rock painting is. There are some AMAZING creative rocks in this post!!!! So this is a craft for kids AND adults!!!
Best rocks for painting
Selecting the perfect rock is the first step in rock painting! Here is what you need to look for when scouting for rocks.
- Smoothness: Look for rocks with a smooth surface. These are easier to paint on and will display your design more clearly and for the paint to go on smoother.
- Shape:Â Consider the rock’s shape in relation to your design. Flat rocks are ideal for painting scenes or words, while unique shapes can inspire creative and interesting artwork. Think about the final design and choose a shape that fits it. You might find a rock shaped like a piece of pizza or a shoe. Sometimes, it’s best to let the rock speak to you!
If you can’t or not able to get out and find your own rocks- you can buy some flat rocks on Amazon!

Cleaning and Preparing Rocks for Painting
Most rocks are dirty (not a huge surprise!) So they need to be cleaned off before you start painting!
- wash: You can put them in a bucket or your sink and add some soap and just clean off any debris.
- Dry: Paint is not going to stick to wet rocks!
Best paint for Rocks
- I recommend acrylic paint. This can be found in most craft stores in a wide variety of colors!
- You can also use paint pens if you want to be able to write words or to add any small details!
- Branch out! We recently used fabric puffy paint to make cool dimensional rocks.
Do you need to seal the rocks?
Yes, sealing painted rocks is highly recommended, especially if you plan to display them outdoors or want to preserve the paint for a longer time. If you are planning on displaying rocks inside with plans on little wear or tear, you could probably skip sealing them.
I recommend an outdoor mod podge as it protects the paint from the elements and prevents colors from fading or wearing off.
What to do with your painted rocks?
I promise that once you start painting rocks, you will probably end up with SO MANY fun ones! And you might wonder what to do with your growing collection of cute rocks!
Try taking your rocks and leaving them on walking trails and playgrounds for kids and adults to come across! It’s like a treasure hunt they don’t even know they are on! It’s so fun to stumble upon a cool rock out in nature!
If you are on facebook, try searching for your town with the word rock. We have a couple in my town and people will show off rocks they are hiding or rocks they found! I think at one time we even had a hashtag so you could follow along!
You can also just leave them in a pretty bowl on your coffee table for people to enjoy like these Inspriational words.
Why Paint Rocks?
Painting rocks has a multitude of benefits for people of all ages. Here’s why you should consider picking up a paintbrush and giving rock painting a try:
- Boosts Creativity: Every rock has a unique shape and texture, challenging you to think creatively about how to turn it into a piece of art. Whether you’re making intricate designs or simple patterns, rock painting stimulates your imagination.
- Enhances Fine Motor Skills: For children, painting on the uneven surfaces of rocks can improve hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. It’s a fun way to develop these essential abilities.
- Outdoor Activity: Searching for the perfect rocks gets you outside, exploring nature.

so, this is great, but for a beginner like me can you spell out the steps into is there a prep for the rock other than washing with water…and what kind of paint works best on them..that would be really really helpful…thanks!

This is a really cool idea. But you never answered the one person’s question above and it is my question. What kind of paint do you use? You never give an illustration of how you paint one rock which has several colors.
