If you need a totally cool project- try this very inexpensive technique! Finish the picture a perfect kid’s craft!

I have been doing this craft with my kids for years (I ‘ve updated this blog post 3 times!) But it stems back to an art project we did in middle school and it was one of my favorites! It’s seriously fun- and the supplies are probably in your house or classroom all ready!

Supplies to Finish the Picture– Kids craft
- drawing paper
- pictures
- magazines
- coloring books
- print some off the internet
- old photos
- Scissors
- glue stick
- pencil, colored pencils, crayons etc

Finish the picture prep
Before the kids get involved, there is a little prep. I go through magazines and find big graphic images. You can print off any images from the internet or use a coloring book for images! I just like using magazines so I can upcycle them into something fun!

Once you have a few, I trim around each image and then cut it in half! (if they picture is big enough, you could cut it into thirds)

You can cut these horizontally, vertically and even diagonally!
Taking a glue stick, attach the image to drawing paper.

You technically can get two drawing pictures – just glue each cut piece to a different paper. This is great especially if you are doing this in a classroom or with a group!
You now have a pile of papers that are ready to get drawn on!

How to FINISH THE PICTURE- KIDS CRAFT
There are so many ways to do this craft. You can have the person look at the piece that you cut off and try to replicate it.

Or let them create completely without a reference point.

If they are older, they can try to add in as much detail as they can with color.
Or turn the picture into something else!

My kids just love this craft! My oldest did 6 pictures and asked me to find her some more!

You can also do a whole bunch of small images and put 4 on one page.
This craft would be super fun to take on road trip. Buy a drawing pad from the dollar store and fill it up with these cutouts! It’s really similar to my Do you Doodle notebook!
Here are some of the pictures my kids did!

I am pleased I came across this! I just finished a project introducing line and pattern to my students. This is a great segue to my next project which parallels this. Inspired by the artist Ben Heine who is known to work in this way, this project bridges the gap!
Thanks!!
For those art teachers out there, here is a list of some great academic language you can introduce with this project!
line, pattern, weight of line, variety, quality of line, continuous, hatched, cross hatched, texture, describing (as in what do you want the line to describe, a hill, a cookie, a face, a tree?)
