Yarn wrapped rainbows! You won’t be able to stop making these when you see how cute and easy they are! Grab some yarn and let’s make some!
I can’t help loving all things rainbow! So naturally—these are like my favorite! And realistically–there will be no two rainbows alike Different colors, different sizes, how many colors to use, pom poms or natural string hanging out- You can customize it so many ways!
Here is what you need to make a yarn rainbow
- yarn (you can do betweeen 3 colors or 100.)
- Rope Chose your thickness of rope. We have 1/2 inch rope and 1/4 inch rope but you can go big!) Also, Nylon is silky and easy to wrap but won’t give you the fringe hanging down. Just choose a nice SMOOTH rope. NO jute!
- Hot Glue Gun
- Felt (for backing and it’s optional)
How to wrap the rope
Start by snipping your layers. each layer will be a different size and it’s important to have the right sizes because it’s hard to trim off when the yarn is on! Add a dob of hot glue on the end and wrap the yarn around a few times and let cool. Then it’s time to wrap it all the way up the rope (I only add hot glue to start and finish. If it’s wrapped tight enough it won’t unravel)
The Nylon rope is smooth so it’s super easy to slide the yarn -that’s why I said no jute. Jute catches the yarn and snaggles it and makes it look fuzzy! Just wrap nice and tight. I told my kiddos that it wasn’t a race!
Work your way all the way down! Keep in mind- bigger rainbows take more time! When you are done you add another dob of hot glue and et dry and snip off your yarn!
and repeat!
When all the pieces are done I decide which side looks the nicest (why is there always one side that looks bad?) and then I hot glue them together on the backside!
I have seen people stitch their’s together…but I love my hot glue gun! You can also add a piece of felt to the back!
How to finish the rainbow
If you want to add pom poms- I made some and then hot glued them to a piece of cardstock to give it a little strength.
Youbcan see the paper I needed to trim up peeking behind those clouds!
and if you want the frayed edge:
You just unravel and try to brush it out with your fingernails. You can use a wide tooth comb too but be careful!
I love how they turned out so much! I have this one sitting on my shelf.
and this one I hot glued a keyring to the back and put it on my daughter’s backpack
Teeny Tiny ones are super fun…
