I know this blog is about a glue gun but it really isn't a good solution to this problem. The glue gun glue will dry hard and over time it will crack. A better solution is a fabric glue that still has some give when it is fully cured. The one that I am familiar with is called Fabritac but I'm sure there are others.

I also prefer to use tshirt fabric for my patches. It is thinner, softer and more flexible than denim and it won't fray along the edges. (If a spot has already ripped once there is likely a lot of stress on it so a flexible patch is preferable to an inflexible one.)
