Okay guys! Hobby Lobby challenged me to make a Lighted Christmas sign using one of their blank wood signs AND lights! And for some reason–I always feel like I need to make all the crazy ideas in my head! So instead of one–I made 3. (and bought stuff for two more but that will come later!) I did this when I was supposed to make a spring wreath (see it here) I blame Hobby Lobby! They have way too many cute things so I just need to make all the things!
Sooo today I have 3 fun different signs that are perfect for your Christmas decor! They all are made up of two main components:
- a wood sign
- and lights!
Hobby Lobby has a whole aisle of fun wood signs that are just ready to be decorated!
And lights!
These are my favorite for two reasons: They are tiny and lay almost flat behind stuff and B they are battery operated–so no cords hanging down if you are putting this on the wall!
The best part about all these signs–so many fun ways to customize it! Different sizes of wood- different sayings. Change out the colors! You can follow this basic idea and do exactly what I do–or you can take the basic idea and add your own splash! Really customize it to your decor and style!!!
I have a video to show you how I created these fun signs!
First up: Lighted STRING ART!
Here is what you need:
Start by sketching out a design (or tracing if you aren’t super awesome at free handing.) I was going for a rustic Tree–so I just kind of free handed it. But think about how many Christmas designs you could do-Reindeer, Santa’s hat, stocking-Next one I want to do is a snowflake! So pretty with these lights!
And then start hammering!
I have a whole post on tips and tricks for string art!
I tried this a couple different times and I think my favorite is doing the fairy lights underneath with the string on top. That way when the lights are off, it still looks like string art! The lights are tiny wires but are still a little noticeable!
Then I added the string! I actually doubled up and did two strings at once to thicken it up!
Hot glue on the star and you are good to go!
I ended up just using some poster putty on the back to hold the battery pack in place!
This one looks so cute with the lights off
and with lights on!
Here is it glowing at night!!!
Next one:
Reindeer Christmas sign
This one I think is my favorite!
Here is what you need:
- a 25
- Antlers (I found these in the “wreath picks” section at Hobby Lobby. It’s a whole aisle of ribbon and ornaments and holly that are perfect for floral arrangments or wreaths!
- Ball (this one is covered in glitter and also found in the wreath pick section)
- Paint
- Drill
- Lights
- wood sign
First: I’m going to say–I messed up on this one! The lights I bought only had 15 lights and I thought it had 20. So I was left with 3 holes without lights. I swapped out for a 20 light of the wire lights–which I like better because they laid a lot flatter on the back! The pictures will have the first set of lights-and both kinds would work! I just wanted to point it out in case anyone looks closely!
Okay. I took a drill bit and added holes that I measured out. (Making sure the lights fit!)
Then I sanded off the rough edges and painted!
I drilled a hole in my wood sign (right where the 2 would cover it up) That way I can pull the lights through and leave the bulky battery pack in the back!
Here are the lights that I was short on–YOu can see the strings are a lot bigger than the other kinds-I didn’t mind it because I thought it would help the 25 stand out from the sign–but you would have to really tape them all down to get them out of the way!
Add on the horns and nose (but really–you could leave the nose off too!)
This one pops quite a bit in the dark! It will glow so pretty on your mantle!
This one is just so darn cute!
and last but not least…
Plaid Merry Christmas Sign
This one is the easiest in my opinion!
Here is what you need:
- wood sign
- lights
- wrapping paper/ scrapbook paper
- christmas sign
I love buffalo check–so I was thrilled to find a whole roll of it! You can use wrapping paper down the middle of your table and as a photo backdrop and even on fun CHRISTMAS SIGNS! There are lots of fun patterned paper in the scrapbook aisle that you can use too! I just trimmed it down-
and cut each piece out to fit the slats of the sign and mod podge it on. You can just tack them down with hot glue too!
These wood letters are the best. I’m actually grabbing another pack because I want to paint them colorful! I just rearranged them (the plaid made it easy to line up)
and then hot glue them in place!
Since the woods had slats-I wanted to the lights to shine through so I taped it around the back edge. (but now that I look at this picture–it would be cute to have the Merry Christmas inside here too! Maybe I will have to go back and made this double-sided! FALL one! (I’m just using packaging tape to keep it in place!)
I thought one of these lighted signs would be so cute on a wreath on your front door! You could even add another thing of lights around the wreath to give it an even brighter glow! (These wreath is made from a Hobby lobby Garland! Check out the how to here!)
(For all the signs–I just add some poster putty and stuck the battery pack to the back of each sign)
OKAY!!! Time to weigh in! What one do you want to make the most?
A.
