This posted last year at the Make it FunĀ® Blog! I love these little cactus–so if you didn’t’ see them the first time around…here you go !
I have seen cactus (or is it Cacti?) everywhere as part of peopleās decor. Ā But since I kill every plant I have ever been put in charge of (poor aloe plants), I wanted to create the fun look of cactusā¦but with NO watering or any maintenance to speak off! Ā So I turned to some FloraCraftĀ® Make It: FunĀ® Foam sheets and whipped up some of my ownĀ DIYĀ cactus dĆ©cor!
Supplies needed to make this project:
- FloraCraftĀ® Make It: FunĀ® Foam: 1 x 12 x 36ā³ sheet
- FloraCraftĀ® Make It: FunĀ® Foam: 2 x 12 x 36ā³ sheet
- FloraCraftĀ® Make It: FunĀ® Foam Cutter
- FloraCraftĀ® Smooth finish
- Thin Wood Skewer or Dowel
- Terracotta Flower Pot
- Paint
- Toothpicks
- Rock Vase Filler
- Tissue Paper Flower
- White Vinyl
- Scissors
Instructions:
I wanted to make each cactus a different thicknessā¦but you can totally use whatever thickness you want! Ā I took a marker and sketched a basic cactus design right on the foam sheet. Ā Using my foam cutter, I cut it out!
I then added some smooth finish to coverĀ the cactus.
Smooth finish does just thatā¦it fills in all the crevices and makes it a smooth surface to paint! Ā You can sand it completely smooth or leave a little texture like I did.
I added some paint ā light green to the small cactus and dark to the big cactus. Ā Then added little highlights and lowlights with the alternate color. Ā It just gives it a little depth!
IĀ then usedĀ my scrap pieces of foam from the cactus to fill it the bottom of the pot!
I added a trimmed Ā wood skewer to the middle of the cactus and pushed it down in the pot. Ā Then I added some rocks to cover the foam in the pot.
I decided that the cactus needed some pokeys on itā¦so I added some toothpicks that I snipped in half. Ā Then, to finish the big one off, Ā I added a tissue paper cactus flower and little vinyl triangles to the pot!
I totally love how they turned out (if I do say so myself!)!
They currentlyĀ sit in my new laundry room to add a little funk and color!
